The Bellydance Diary

How can i ever forget my first ever shimmy?

I love to dance. No doubt. I dance to every beat. Dancing is the hidden language of our soul. We dance to express our feelings.

I remember teacher Kim once told me, “You should write a bellydance diary. Capture every moment, blog about it.” And so here I am writing this down and taking a trip to a memory lane where I first entered the dance room and followed the beat of bellydancing.

Teacher Kim – my bellydance teacher, mentor, make-up artist, choreographer, costume designer, friend, sister and my idol. Yes, she’s a super-woman. My passion for bellydancing, I owe it all to her. Thanks for believing and seeing the best of me.

You can contact Kim Bellydancer on facebook if you need costumes, choreographer and performer for events. https://www.facebook.com/Kim-Bellydancer-259450924097953/timeline/

It all started here....

2012. Gold’s Gym, Glorietta

I was checking out list of group classes to attend and the first class that caught my attention is – Bellydance Class. I saved the schedule and attended the class for the first time. And the moment the music was played, I was in dance heaven. I told myself I want this and I will do this.

Learning the art of ‘shimmy’.

In bellydancing, you don’t just dance, move your hips the sexy way and call it bellydancing. Definitely not. You have to feel the beat, the music and express yourself freely. There are so many styles, techniques, steps and routines to learn. Learning is neverending. When I shimmy, I feel free!

My 1st shimmy belt/belly scarf.         A gift from teacher Kim.

I started my bellydance journey at Gold’s gym and that’s where I found love and passion for bellydancing. I’ve met new friends who in time turned out to be my ‘kendeng sisters’.

At the gym, we normally start off with a warm up, then teacher Kim will teach few dance techniques then work on a choreography that we will be dancing at the end of each session.

Was invited to attend a Holloween Costume Party @ Kasbah. Of course, we came over as Bellydancers' and danced the night away.

After months of classes, teacher Kim invited us for a bellydance event at Kasbah, The Fort. It’s a bellydance event where you are free to express yourself, create your own dance choreography and perform on stage. A lot of bellydancers from different cities and groups came to perform. Of course I will not miss this opportunity so I gave myself a chance.

For the 1st time, I performed a solo dance. If you will notice, I still have a lot to learn that time. Forgive me, I was really newbie in the bellydance world.

Of course my kendeng-sisters did a group performance as well and teacher Kim named us ‘Gaga Golds’ – representing Gold’s gym bellydance students. Haha, I love the name! You'll go gaga!

After performing on event such as this, I can’t stop thinking about dancing: how to improve, how to do well and when is the next event? I got addicted to belly dancing!

This is where I joined teacher Kim’s workshop at Big Shift studio. I, along with my kendeng-sisters are once again reunited to continue our bellydance journey.

And what is belly dancing without a Photoshoot?

March last year, we were invited by teacher Kim to join her at a movie gig, thanks a lot teacher Kim and to your boss Jhong Hilario for this amaaaazing opportunity!!!

Bellydance Demo Class

It’s really great when you are given the chance to share your passion for dancing to other people. We were invited to do a bellydance demo for the students of St. Scholastica in Makati.

It feels wonderful teaching kids how to bellydance. I want to do this more often when I have the chance....maybe someday.

Teaching my niece and her classmates for a school presentation.

Also teaching bellydance at work after office hours.

And so we danced again for a debut. With teacher Kim, Ms. Analie and Anna Marie

When belly dancers get bored...

I know my bellydance journey will never end as long as my feet can move to the beat of a bellydance music. I can say I will be dancing till I’m older and how I love to share the joys of dancing to the people who are open to embrace the world of bellydance.

Aiwa!!!
